Dieabolical Die (Mentalism Effect )

Postby Happy Toad » Apr 8th, '04, 14:13

From: http://www.wandmagic.co.uk/content/mentalism/dieabolical.htm

Cost: £13 plus 85p P&P

A very clever Brass effect.

What you get is a little brass box and a brass die, all very good quality and comes in a little black draw string bag.

Effect:

You hand the die and box to a spec who is asked to place the die in the box while your back is turned or you could even leave the room. The lid is placed on the box thus completely hiding the die. This is then all passed back to you and after a bit of mind-reading, rubbing the box or whatever the magician is able to correctly identify the face up number of the die. Using the Derren Brown trick of getting them to say each number slowly, is a useful way of throwing them right of the scent and implying that they are sub consciously saying the correct number slightly differently to the others.

This can be repeated as often as you want and can be examined before after or even during and nothing will be found.

Of course you could use the fact that you know the number by doing another trick based on the number that they don't think you know.

It's very easy to do, though it did take me 20 mins or so before I got the hang of it, I'm sure I was just being slow though.

All in all a very nice trick at a very good price.

Delivery was also quick and even came with a very nice handwritten note.

If anyone has any good patter ideas I'd love to hear them.

I'm not sure what score to give it, in that I don't think it's ever going to get the biggest reaction, as lets face it, you have a 1 in 6 chance of guessing it correctly,( if performed only once ) but what it does, it does very well, and in that regard gets a 10 out of 10. Maybe a 7 out of 10 for the effect it has. For myself I'll use it to "tune" in to someone, before doing a mentalism trick with a much higher than 1 in 6 chance of getting it right by guesswork.

This looks incredibly similar to Die Cypher II. It was reviewed Here

Whats more it looks much much cheaper, and just as well made. I wonder if this is just a remarketing?

Yes it does look identical, though spinning is not needed and in fact I can't see how it would help at all.

Do you have both - or have you seen both? in which case would you recommend the diabolical over the Cypher on all accounts?

If so, I may just have a Die Cypher II up for sale soon (at a knock down price of £14) :)

No I only have the one, I'll PM you to see if we can figure if it's the same thing.

Right having chatted to Banana fish it appears the two are almost identical although this one is slightly modified and is an improvement.

I have to admit this trick has given me a real headache, the girlfriend has given me real grief over it, she has been pestering me all evening to tell her how it works. Normally she is quite happy not to know, but this one seems to have really got her going. She sat there studying it for ages and was most frustrated with me for not telling her.

my version was from a french suplier bourght in windingo's chain (portsolent).
it suggests spinning but this has been superseeded with some good old rock and roll   .

seems this little miricle comes under diferent names, divination being a two stage process, sounds the same as everyone else's.

Nah Dieabolical is an improvement on Die cipher, no need for any spinning or in fact any movement at all.
