Utopia Prediction by Alex Blade
£10.00 from :// www.magictricks.co.uk

The Effect.

A seemingly impossible prediction of a word in the current days newspaper is made several days before!

Several days/weeks before the show, the performer posts an envelope to a member of the audience with a request that it is brought on the night of the show. On the night, the audience are seated and the performer states how, "weeks/days in advance , I mailed an envelope to a member of the audience here and asked that she bring it tonight". She is asked up on stage with the envelope where she confirms no one has touched it and it has been sealed the whole time.

She then is asked to open up the envelope and announce what is inside.

Spectator: “There is a folded up piece of paper inside”
Magician: “Would you care to take it out and read what it says”

The spectator does so and reads aloud: "On Wednesday 15th of July , on page 9 of The Daily Mail , third word along , the word will be...DEMANDS"
A copy of The Daily Mail is shown, the date is confirmed , and is turned to page nine where – sure enough – the 3rd word along is "demands"!!

It uses no gimmicks, no stooges and no switches.
Any newspaper can be used.
It is completely self-working

Difficulty. 1/5
1=Even I can do it, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

There’s no doubt about it. It couldn’t be any easier.

Review.
Well I have to admit that the method is very workable and does everything he claims it to do. If you are looking to do this particular effect then I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending it.

When you find out the method I can guarantee that you will kick yourself, and my first thoughts were that surely someone must have already come up with this before – if not then Alex Blade needs one heck of a pat on the back for putting it in print. Let’s hope he has many more bright ideas.

Alex mentions in the manuscript that it is best performed at a friends house. Personally I’d disagree with this. For sure it would go down very well at a dinner party, but for me it deserves a bigger wider audience than this. I can imagine Banacheck, or Max Maven doing this on stage, and feel that it would be better suited in a Stage/Parlour environment.

I don’t do much Stage/Parlour work myself, however next time I am asked to perform at my local club, or the next dinner party I have I will definitely be giving this one a go.

Rating. Effect/item: 9/10, Quality of goods: 10/10, Value for money: 8/10

Bottom Line.
My first thoughts that this wasn’t great value for money. After all, in this modern era of ebooks, we can pick up the likes of the “Underground Collection vol1” or “Ignis Fatuus” for £10, and they are both choc-o-block full of effects, whereas Utopia Prediction is just one.

However, thinking about it for a little longer it is something I will be using, and so for that reason alone I feel that £10 isn’t that much to pay for a trick of this sort, heck I’ve paid a lot more for some very unusable effects.

This effect does everything it says it does. If you want to do the effect as described – then I recommend you use Alex’s method.

I suspect that the comment about doing it at a friends house, came from the fact that he has friends like many of mine,
where newspapers live on the sofa for a few days, then migrate to the floor for a week. :)

One thing that this effect does have, that hasn't been mentioned, is great publicity potential. worked properly, this low priced effect could , no would generate quite a few further bookings.

I would recommend describing the contents of a photograph or advertisement though, rather than just a word.

I agree with Dale, a photo/advert would actually work much better.

This is so simple, I still can't believe it hasn't actually done before...

Just to let everyone know , with a little tweaking here and there...you could also use this method to predict the winning lottery numbers....

The problem with lottery numbers, though, is that you would lose all possible credibility. No matter what reasoning you give, no-one will believe that you knew the lottery numbers weeks in advance and did not buy a ticket.

I suppose it could be used as a finale though, say that now you are a millionaire you don't need to do any more magic and just leave!

I have to agree with Nick - the question "So, why are you here if you can predict the lottery?" comes to mind.

I would like to point out that for my two-penneth, the whole thing would gain far more reaction (as suggested) if done to a large audience.

This is mainly because if the item was simply mailed to someone you already know, there is far too much suspicion. Wheras, in a crowd, the effect would play a lot bigger.

My only other concern is the huge risk of being 'found out'. It is not impossible that someone after the show may 'investigate' and work the method out for themselves.

But, after saying all of that, it's a killer effect for sure - and for £10, you can hardly go wrong, even if you only use this in the 'Friends' situation as a hobbyist.

Nice one, Mr Kerplunk!

BY THE WAY - I HAVE NOW BOUGHT THIS ITEM, AND IT IS WAY, WAY BETTER THAN I HAD PREVIOUSLY IMAGINED
Again, nice one, Kerplunk - may this be the start of bigger things for you.

Can someone who bought this from MT please help me out?
The website says that it's available to download as soon as you've ordered it. Well I ordered it at lunchtime yesterday and got an order confirmation email...and that's it. I was expecting a link, or a password, or another email with an attachment but I haven't had anything.
I queried this via email and got a response before 9am today to say that someone else would get back to me this morning.
Still nothing.

Am I being dense? Have I missed something? How did you guys actually get hold of the PDF?

Charles - email the owner of magictricks (carl). They did have problems with the download initially and I believe were offering a £2 voucher to everyone that had a problem..

Apparrently Hotmail was bouncing their emails. MT eventually managed to get in touch with me and posted the PDF to another address. They were very helpful and there doesn't seem to be a problem with distributing downloads from their end.

For me it was ok. It has one major problem however this is a problem that can be overcome very easily. In fact it is already part of my normal headline prediction method.

The problem as I see it, when dealing with headlines you really need to deal with a headline rather than just one word.

However if you were to take Alex Blades ideas and mix them with several others Lee Earle and John Riggs come to mind, then I think it would be a sequence that would play well.

I also see it as being useable within a one ahead sequence.

Interesting but for me - maybe more could be doen to make it a "worker".

Luke.

This is a great effect and the best thing about it is that you may combine it with other effects and notions in the same way David Berglas did for example in The Press Club Prediction.
The latest Polter effect comes to mind...
You predict that something will fall.
You can even deconstruct the effect in such away that people will go home and when they will check their own newspapr they will find the same word you predicted...
