The Effect
Colour Changing Shoelace by Dynamo - DVD
Dynamo's Colour Changing Shoelace was used in the Adidas advert 2006 and was one of the tricks he performed in his award winning close-up act. Dynamo is one of the true up and coming talents in British Magic.
On this, his first DVD, he fully explains how to construct and fit the gimmick to your trainers, then how to perform the effect. It features live performances of Dynamo showing the effect on the street and one of his many trade show bookings, plus bonus footage.
Running Time Approximately 25min
Cost
£14.99 at http://www.dudethatscoolmagic.co.uk/acatalog/Street_Magic_tricks.html#aB339
Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
1 to perform and build the gimmick (but could be expensive)
Review
Let us first focus on what you get for your money, a dvd with the secret of the colour changing shoe laces, excellent step by step instructions on how to make the gimmick that at times reminded me of Blue Peter, ‘here’s one I made earlier’. Although I felt Dynamo kept stating the painfully obvious like ‘make sure you use different colour laces’, he covered every corner. Any adult will be able to make the gimmick although you will not be performing this effect unless you go out and spend a sizeable amount of money first (this was the big let down for me). There are no bonus effects on this DVD which is a real shame, it does contain some footage from a show that says it was award winning I think some of the TM members will die when they watch it, if you get the DVD watch what’s hanging out of his back pocket during his performance. Back to the dvd, straight into a brief history of how they came up with the effect and then an explanation of how the gimmick works and a step by step instruction on the construction of the gimmick. It does what it says on the cover, so it is therefore concise and easy to follow.
Overall
Should you buy it or shouldn’t you… That is the question. Well it is an outstanding effect that leaves you clean and you could take the trainer off and let it be examined after. You might want to get a sponsor like nike or addidas before making the gimmick, nuff said before any exposure.
I will make this and try it out with VERY cheap trainers.
I am really in 2 minds about this DVD, the effect is outstanding and as with all tricks once you learn the method your response is normally ‘is that it!’ This surprised me although I was not far off with my guess work, but the gimmick is easy to make but will take a lot at the same time, I’m being cryptic here, sorry.
Out of 10 for the effect and reactions a well earned 9
For the dvd and its content an 8, Dynamos performance in the clips is really not good although he does inspire me with my magic and can handle a deck of cards well while body popping and perform some great effects, taking magic to the street will always get loud over the top reactions, just the way it should be!
For his first instructional DVD, well done. _________________ No Strings... |

The effect does look very good, but not really for me. Thanks for the review. _________________ The best of the best, in no particular order: Lennart, Tommy, Tom, Derren and Benjamin.

I think understand what you mean by the effect being expensive, however doou have to perform in trainers? Could you "use" a deck shoe for instance?
Thanks

Hi Al, not sure about deck shoes and I cant comment too much about the kind of shoes but it will not work with all trainers, Dynamo explains on his dvd what shoes are apropriate. Sorry I cant be more specific but I'm being very carefull not to be accused of exposure Some people will be deeply dissapointed with this one, some will laugh out loud and some will make the gimmick and have a killer effect _________________ No Strings... |

| Hmmm. Thanks for the reply. Think I can think of other stuff I would rather spend my money on thinking about it. I am sure it will work for some, but if I was seen in trainers it would raise suspision right away! |

| Nice review mate, very indepth i must say. Sounds like an intresting "visual" kind of effect. I've been looking for something to vary my usual card & coin tricks.....however, does anyone know if this trick uses the same method as the Self Tying Shoelace? - I image it probably does, but i just wanted to be sure before buying it |
