Mr And Misdirection

Postby juniper » Jan 27th, '04, 22:34

:) Don't quiet know what to say about myself other than I enjoy performing card tricks and other general magic tricks for people.
I get a real kick out of the expressions on there faces(and"How did you do that") after any trick I perform. It makes the time spent learning a new trick worthwhile.

Misdirection is not my strongest asset but I work at it.
Any tips gladly received.

Welcome.

The best tip for misdirection I feel is to engage your spectators interest in YOURSELF as much as possible. You can do this just by being an entertaining and friendly person and not looking to nervous or smelling bad. Then you just direct your own attention in one direction and the spectators will always follow. It is not a physical process at all, but a psychological and emotional one.

Look forwards to hearing more from you one the boards.

And a welcome from me as well - great to have you here!

There's loads of help on misdirection in various books and websites to numerous to mention but simple things like looking away from where the 'business' is taking place usually means the specs follow your gaze as well. Also, pointing at one hand with the other tends to mean they look where you point. Raising the innocent and empty hand means they follow that move whilst the guilty other hand invisibly ditches something which is no longer required. Whatever you do make it natural and casual, only the Amazing Jonathan gets away with explosions in the background as misdirection!

I find that if you can getting someone off stage to drop a plate at the moments you need misdirection really helps a lot...

Failing that, pay a bloke to stand at the back of the room and shout 'Oi!' at the right moment.

When I was a kid (back in the day of dodos) I went on holiday to spain, there they allow kids to watch horror films in bars :) I was watching Friday the 13th and at the end the bad guy comes through a window, just when you think it's finished, just at that moment the waiter thought it a good idea to drop his tray next to me to see if I had a nappy on.
I didn't, I was indeed misdirected that afternoon.

Welcome to the board :) enjoy your stay m8ty.

Misdirection occurs everyday in normal life. The game where you pretend to see something on someone's jumper and then flick their nose when they look down. A fake pass in rugby.

I do not suggest you go around flicking everyones noses, but misdirection is all about practice, you'll get their eventually, Good Luck and Welcome.
